SELECTION
POLICY - Approved by the Educational Service Unit 17 Board of Directors on February
27, 2003
One of the
responsibilities of the Educational Service Unit 17 Media Center is the acquisition
of resources in a variety of formats that support the teaching styles and curriculum
of our member schools.
The following
information details the Selection Policy of material acquisitions by the Educational
Service Unit 17 Media Center.
RESPONSIBILITY
OF SELECTION
While the
Board of Educational Service Unit 17 is legally responsible for all matters
relating to the operation of the Educational Service Unit, the responsibility
of material selection is delegated to the professionally trained Media Center
personnel employed by the Board.
MATERIAL
SELECTION POLICY WITHIN THE EDUCATIONAL SERVICE UNIT 17 MEDIA CENTER MANUAL
CONTAINS
1. A statement
of the Educational Service Unit 17 philosophy, particularly in relation to educational
materials and intellectual freedom.
2. Statement
which summarizes the aims and objectives of the Media Center in relation to
the overall philosophy of the Educational Service Unit.
3. List of
those who participate in selection and of the specific objectives of the selection
function.
4. Indication
of delegated as well as final responsibility for selection including a definition
of the position of the Media Center personnel in this operation.
5. List of
the types of media found in the Media Center and of the criteria applied to
the selection of each.
6. Enumeration
of the selection aids most frequently consulted.
7. Descripition
of the procedures, forms and practices used in selection.
8. Indication
of areas of the collection that will be either stressed or deemphasized.
9. Statement
concerning the Media Center's policies towards gifts, sponsored material, weeding,
duplication, limited usage and replacement.
10. Information
concerning any coopertive acquisition projects to which the Media Center is
involved in.
11. Descripition
of the procedures for handling complaints and a copy of any forms used when
a request is made to reevaluate a particular piece of material.

GUIDELINES
FOR MATERIAL ACQUISITION
For materials
consideration within the Educational Service Unit 17 Media Center the following
points need to be adhered to:
1. Bibliographic
information provided - Title, Producer, Vendor
2. Format
or technical aspects - Quality of sound, color, picture, superior quality of
production
3. Content
of resource - Scope of work, limitations of coverage, up to date, objectivity,
timeliness
4. Organization
of resource - Suitability of length, clarity of presentation, interest, pacing,
amount of review and repetition, range of difficulty, diversity of appeal, different
points of view and free of bias.
5. Suitability
of resource - Appropriateness to the medium, grade level
6. Teachers'
aids - Guides and or worksheets
7. Importance
of the subject matter to the curriculum studies by member schools.
8. Authoritativeness
of materials in formats to the instructional application.
9. Copyright
of instructional material.
10. Instructional
materials that have been previewed for quality, additionally, please provide
an evaluation document.
11. Duplication
of materials already in the collection.
12. Ability
to obtain duplication rights versus "single copy" acquisitions. Due
to a limited amount of monies within the budget for acquisitions, the Educational
Service Unit 17 Media Center will mainly purchase resources that can fit the
needs of many of our member schools rather than limited or individual usage.
13. Product
alignment to Nebraska Standards.
The Media
Coordinator whom is responsible for the Media Center budget has the final approval
for any and all Media acquisitions.
METHODS
USED TO DETERMINE CURRICULUM NEEDS FROM THE MEMBER SCHOOLS INCLUDE:
1. Teacher
requests for specific items, that have been previewed and are submitted to Educational
Service Unit 17 Media Coordiantor.
2. Subject
bibliographies conducted by the staff of the Educational Service Unit 17 Media
Center.
